Vet Advice: 5 Tips For Keeping Your Dog Healthy

All good dog owners want to keep their dogs healthy. You love your dog, and you want her to be healthy and happy. Help keep your dog on the path to wellness with these dog health guidelines.

High-quality veterinary care sets the foundation for your dog’s overall health. Find a veterinarian you can trust and visit regularly. Ideally, routine wellness examinations should be performed by your vet twice a year.

Puppies and senior dogs should be seen even more frequently. If your dog has special needs, a chronic health condition or other illness, comply with your vet’s recommendations. Because your dog ages at a faster rate than you, many subtle changes can develop over a six to twelve month period.

Routine visits allow your vet to closely monitor changes before your dog’s health gets out of control. Learn how to effectively communicate with your vet and you can expect the same in return. If you can develop a good connection with your vet, it can lead to long-term benefit for you and your dog.

  • Optimum Nutrition

Proper nutrition is a fundamental for keeping all dogs healthy. Diet directly affects your dog’s skin and coat, weight, energy level, and gastrointestinal function. If a problem occurs in one of these areas, it may be linked to improper diet. Choose a high-quality dog food made by a reputable company, or learn about homemade diets. Once you find the right food for your dog, use that food consistently. Watch your dog’s response to the diet over 4-8 weeks.

How does her coat look? It should be shiny and free of flakes, but not greasy. Have you noticed a change in her energy level? A decrease in energy could indicate a problem. Has she lost or gained weight? Obesity in dogs is a very common problem which can often be reversed with proper diet and exercise. Excess weight loss may occur if your dog does not find the food palatable.

If her response to the diet is poor, it may be time to look into other foods. A sudden change in dog foods can cause gastrointestinal upset, so switch over gradually unless otherwise directed by your vet.

  • Routine Exercise

Many dog owners underestimate their dogs’ exercise needs in relation to keeping their dog healthy. Destructive behavior may lead to a diagnosis of separation anxiety or other behavioral problems. While these conditions truly exist, in many cases the behavior is actually the result of an energy surplus. If you feed your dog a healthy diet, it should give her plenty of energy. However, if your dog can’t release that energy with exercise, it may be released on your furniture, carpet, doorways, or even your prized collection of rare books.

Before you blame your dog for the damage, ask yourself if she’s getting enough exercise. In general, dogs need at least 1-2 hours of exercise per day, but this varies by breed, size and age. Over time, determine the ideal exercise regimen for your dog and establish a routine. You might even notice an improvement in your own health in the meantime.

  • Dental Care

It can be all too easy to forget about your dog's teeth until you get a whiff of bad breath. Plaque and tartar build-up can lead to serious health problems. Don't wait until dental disease is present - start focusing on dental care right now, if you nave not already.

You can brush your dog's teeth, use oral rinses, feed dental treats, or all of the above - just do something. And don't forget to talk to your vet about your dog's teeth. Professional cleanings may be necessary from time to time.

  • Regular Grooming

Grooming is not just for “fancy” dogs. All dogs need some degree of basic physical upkeep. In general, your dog’s grooming needs will be based on her breed. However, your dog may have special needs due to health conditions such as allergies. The average short-haired dog will benefit from a monthly nail trim, bath and brushing. Long-haired dogs should be brushed out daily.

Dogs with continuously growing hair may need a haircut every week or two. Once you determine your dog’s grooming needs, decide if you will be doing it yourself, or if you need to hire a professional. Either way, schedule grooming sessions for your dog on a regular basis.

  • Watch for Warning Signs

Because our dogs cannot speak in words, we must rely on the signs they give us when it comes to analyzing our dog's health. Your dog may exhibit a variety of signs that indicate a health problem. Just like you, your dog can develop a mild illness that resolves on its own, so not all signs are cause for alarm. However, many dogs will instinctively try to conceal signs of serious illness. Learn what to watch for and how to act appropriately before the illness becomes out of control. If your dog is displaying signs of illness, contact your vet right away.

  • Save Your Dog's Life: Two New Recalls of Dog Food!

  • Save Your Dogs Life...here!

(October 15, 2009 - About.com) Last week, it was the Premium Edge cat food recall. This week, news of two brands of dog food that have been voluntarily recalled by the manufacturers.

There is some question as to exactly when the notices were posted for the public. The recall notices are not dated, but the Nutro recall web site notice has 10-1-09 in the URL.

Wysong Recall - due to Mold Contamination

Are we finding out soon enough?

I found out about these recalls like many people do - on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. News of yet another pet food recall is frustrating enough. I am now reading many angry posts and blog comments about the timing and visibility of the releases.

  • Save Your Dogs Life...here!

    Searching for information

At this writing, searching Google News for the term "pet food recall," doesn't yield recall news from manufacturer sites, even when I add in company names. Rather, I find blogs and news sites reporting about these recalls.

The Wysong recall page tackles some of these questions in the "concerns, questions, allegations" section of their recall notice.

In brief, here is Wysong's answer to the timeliness of response:

"Much of the criticism regarding the recall has centered on us purportedly not publicizing the recall enough, or that we are attempting to downplay or hide the recall. What is missed here is that we keep thorough records pertaining to who receives what products. Accordingly, when we determined a recall was necessary we put our focus into alerting those that actually received the products, and not those that had no reasonable chance of acquiring the affected products." (their emphasis)

    What do you think?

Are we finding out fast enough? Should pet food companies put the recall information on their front page or contact known outlets?

  • Thank God He Refused To "Put Her Down!"

"Thank you so very much for doing what no vet would take the time to investigate and recommend to me...other than to "put her down"..

I have switched her over to home cooked meals, as outlined in Dog Food Secrets, and she no longer has loose, foul smelling stools, and her skin is almost totally back to normal in less than one month!"

It's true. My vet recommended I put Dulcinea down. Dulcinea had loose stools and skin difficulties from 8 weeks when I picked her up at the breeders. I tried basically every dog food on the market, but without success.

She developed such bad hot spots that I tried Benadryl which helped a bit, but then finally gave her 2 steroid injections (I am a retired Physician).

The hot spots disappeared, the skin calmed down, but then she started to lose her hair in spots all over her body. What had I done to m' Lady???

After trying every skin remedy out, I finally took her to the vet. Skin scrapings showed generalized Yellow Mange. The first advice [from the vet] was to put her down; now that really irked me, as the vet had not listened to the whole story. (By the way, she still had loose stools with mucus daily; foul smelling).
At 14 months, I wasn't about to put this fine lady down, so got to researching.

The Ivermectin Injections have killed the mange, the hair is growing back in, but the skin remained horribly inflamed.

Then, I purchased your "Dog Food Secrets Gold Package", and finally realized that she was having food allergies to much of the crap that was in her dog food.

I have switched her over to home cooked meals, as outlined, and she no longer has loose, foul smelling stools, and her skin is almost totally back to normal in less than one month! (see photo!!!)

Thank you so very much for doing what no vet would take the time to investigate and recommend to me...other than to "put her down".

I have 4 other Bloodhounds (from 10 months up to 4 years old), and 5 puppies from a litter of 15. They all are getting the "good stuff", and finally love their food, instead of leaving it in the bowls.

Now the Knight-n-Troll's Sleuthhound Kennels recommends this diet and Dog Food Secrets to all that come to check out our dogs/purchase puppies.

  • My Dog Already Looks & Behaves 5-Years Younger!

"After Only 1-Month of Following Your Advice, My Dog Already Looks & Behaves 5-Years Younger!"

If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes I wouldn't believe it! My dog actually looks younger, it's amazing.

He's also got much more pep. He slowed down somewhat in the last few years and I put it down to approaching old age, but since I started feeding him the way you teach in Dog Food Secrets, he's had a new burst of life!

Once again he's running instead of walking, alert instead of sleeping... it's like having the young-guy back again, I love it.

Pretty sure he's rather pleased as well!

  • Maxine has lost 8lbs in just 5-weeks!

"Maxine Has Lost 8lbs In 5-Weeks, She Looks Better, Smells Better & Behaves Better!"

The biggest of our 3 kids is a beautiful 59kg (130 lb) Rottweiler called Maxine.

My other 2 kids (both human) , my husband and I are all quite sporty so it was a source of amusement amongst our friends that Maxine was a fatty!

I didn't like to hear her teased but as far as we knew, we were feeding her a decent diet of commercial dog food.

When I saw that Dog Food Secrets shows how to prepare calorie controlled meals for dogs, I knew I must find out how and the results are astounding!

She obviously looks better but to our surprise also has better breath, smaller, less stinky poos and seems to have improved self-control which we guess is from an improved diet.

[That's right Darleene, commercial dog food is full of sugar and preservatives all known to effect behavior unfavorably.. Andrew]

Now she's a beautiful beast for sure, a few more pounds and Maxine will be the cutest dog in town!

    Best regards,

  • I'm never buying commercial dog food again!

"Thanks to Dog Food Secrets, not only has Allie lost a lot of weight and is happier, Panda loves the food and licks the bowl when finished!! Their feces are not as smelly, smaller and dry. And their coats are really shinny and moist!!"

Allie & Panda had different problems but both doing much better. I had big problems with Allie, our mongrel. Allie gained a lot of weight and I couldn't tell why cause she only eats dry dog food.

My other dog, a bearded collie called Panda, was quite slim as she didn't like the dry dog food and only ate a little when she was starving.

Since I tried your recipes in Dog Food Secrets, not only Allie has lost a lot of weight and is happier, Panda loves the food and licks the bowl when finished!!

Their feces are not as smelly and are smaller and dry. And their coats are really shinny and moist!!

It's been only a couple of months and the difference is huge.

I'm never buying commercial dog food again as I wonder now what was I giving to my dogs before. And it's costing me much less as well.

Thank you for Dog Food Secrets. Your books have opened my eyes.

  • Brandy has a beautiful coat, lots of energy, and smells really good!

"Every time we bring them to the vet's she is amazed at what good shape they are in and how clean they are. I tell her it's their diet. I only wish I had your books a few years ago for my German Shepherd dog. I know it would have helped her too."

    Hi,

My husband and I raise Rough Collies.

Brandy is our female, a beautiful sable and white.

Unfortunately, she was not doing well on store bought dog kibbles. Her coat was not growing in and she shed a lot- lots more than I believe Collies should!

I searched the Internet looking for answers since most breeders and vets recommend only high price dog food. Since we have 4 dogs we didn't want that expense.

I found your site and bought your e-books. Since we were already feeding table scrapes it made sense to me to go that way.

Since following your recipes and feeding advice, Brandy has a beautiful coat, lots of energy, and smells really good. As an added bonus since we always sprinkle garlic on their food, none of our pups have fleas!

Brandy will turn 2 yrs old in a few weeks and just delivered 11 healthy collie pups less than 2 days ago! She has her figure back, is eating well and her coat looks great!

I'm convinced it's because we feed her "people" food. She is getting a cup of puppy chow along with her good food as she is nursing so many pups.

Right now I have her on a high protein diet.

The proud papa, Duke, is on the same diet and he looks stunning also. We also have a 10 yr old terrier and a mixed breed that are looking and acting younger since on this diet.

Every time we bring them to the vet's she is amazed at what good shape they are in and how clean they are. I tell her it's their diet. I only wish I had your books a few years ago for my GSD. I know it would have helped her too.

Thanks for setting us on the right track so we can enjoy many years with our beloved fur babies!

  • Looking forward to many more years with our loving dogs!

"Unfortunately, his joints are feeling so much better, that he feels the need to jump the fence again! We were amazed to see him not only jump the fence but clear it by a foot!"

Buddy's (bigger dog) joints are feeling so much better. He has gone from hobbling to leaping the fence AND he has better breath & less gas! The reason I got Dog Food Secrets was because a few months ago my cat Siris died at age 3 from kidney failure.

    I was devastated.

Mia (my new puppy) has helped me deal with that. I am still having a hard time coping when I think of how Siris suffered.

I won't make the same mistake with Mia.

Being just a puppy, I don't have any wonderful stories for her. But I do have an uplifting story from Buddy.

Buddy is 7 years old (he is my brothers dog). Buddy had been having some joint problems and tiring very quickly.

Some kind person warned me that big dogs don't live as long as smaller dogs. I am sure they were trying to prepare me for what they thought were his last days.

When I found Dog Food Secrets, I started Buddy on the food as well. He is now keeping up with Mia who is 4 months old.

I am very please that he doesn't smell like he used to. He doesn't have as much gas and his breath has improved.

I look forward to many more years with Buddy and a long happy life with Mia.

    Thank you!

  • Our Vet Was Very Unhappy!

"The girls like homemade much better than store bought. Plus it saves TONS of money and I know what they are eating."

Overweight Hope (right) is losing weight and has increased energy after only 2-weeks of Mary following our advice. Hope is 2 yrs old and Faith is 6 months they are both Mini Austrailian Shephards.

Hope was 38 pounds and the vet was very unhappy. Of course we love our girls very much and love to give them treats.

I have started using your dog food recipes for the past 2 weeks and Hope has dropped 1/2 lb which isn't a huge amount but it is a start in the right direction.

Because of Hope's weight she was very sluggish and didn't play with Faith too much.

Since using your easy dog treat recipes for her treats and changing their dog food to one you recommend, she is as full of life as a 2 yr old should be.

I haven't yet had a chance to try the dog food recipes but the treats are a big hit.

I can only hope that both my girls live to the ripe old age of 27+. Thank you very much for the dog nutrition recipes and the information.

We always watch what we eat but until your book I never really thought about what was in their dog food.

For treats I bought mostly chicken jerky but there of course were other items that I picked up.

It is disgusting that the manufacturer's are killing our animals because they can use any ingredients they want.

I like to know that my girls are eating as healthy as I am. That way we can all be around for a very long time.

I have already started assembling dog treat baskets for my friends pets for Christmas. We need to get everyone feeding their pets healthy treats and food.

Thanks for writing the book. Unfortunatly what got you motivated was the loss of your beloved pet.

Please accept my sympathy and my girls thanks.

  • Shinier Coat, Clearer Eyes, NO Wet Dog Smell!

"After Only 26 Days Of Using Your Hand-Picked Recipes 'Tornado' Has a Shinier Coat, Clearer Eyes & Has Lost His 'Wet-Dog' Smell"

It's really common sense that your dog should be healthier if they stop eating processed food. If I ate nothing but tinned food for a month I'm certain I'd feel like crap and probably look it too.

...but the great thing I liked about your book Andrew, is you hand-picked the recipes after trying them on your own dog. Believe me, that saves me a lot of friggin' around trying to work out what my dog likes that is also healthy for him, that's kinda the reason I hadn't done it before seeing your book.

It's now day 26 since I started following your advice & using your recipes and I gotta say it's going much better than I expected.

'Tornado' has a much shinier coat (which I did expect to see) but I'm completely surprised to discover his eyes have much become clearer. I didn't realize but they were kind of yellowish before... now they are a very clear white.

Even more suprising is he has lost the 'wet-dog' smell my girlfriend always complained about. But I was thinking about it and it makes sense that if you're healthier, you should have less unpleasant body odor...

Anyway Andrew, your advice rocks. Now I can have my 2 loves, my girlfriend & my dog, in the same room at the same time!!

    Cheers Andrew,

  • 1 Batch of Old English Oatmeal Cookies Lasts Me 7-days & My Dog Loves Them!

Roxy is still snacking but it's calorie controlled & she's losing weight!

Being a full-time grad student I spend heaps of time at my desk with some snacks on the table and my dog, Roxy, by my feet.

Whenever Roxy hear's the rustle of a plastic bag she nudges me for her share of the 'snack-bounty'... who am I to say no?

Everytime I give her a snack I hear my parents' voices in my head saying 'human snacks are bad for dogs, don't do it!'. Worse still, I know it's true.

Andrew, your dog snack recipes are awesome because I can whip-up a batch during a study break and they last for days. Best part is I control exactly what goes into them, including how much fat and sugar...knowing that is actually quite empowering.

Now on my desk I have my snacks and Roxy's. She loves them and using the calorie-counting techniques you showed me, I adjust her main meals to account for the snacks and she is actually losing her weight.

    Thanks Muchly,
    Vivian
